The Kareri Lake Trek: Route, Team & Setup
The Kareri Lake trek is a moderate-level Himalayan trek that we experienced with a small entourage of a guide, a cook, and a horse handler through a local tour company for our four-night, five-day route. Four horses carried the tents, food, and other essentials, allowing us to walk with only light daypacks. The trek begins near Mcleod Ganj in Dharamshala, making it accessible to visitors staying in the town. It’s considered suitable for fit beginners with reasonable endurance, though the altitude gain and steep sections demand respect. The total distance comes to roughly 26km each way, which sounds manageable until you account for the elevation and the mountain terrain. If you are planning other hikes in the area, the Kareri Lake trek pairs well with the shorter Triund trek, which is another popular trail starting from Dharamkot near Mcleod Ganj.
On the first day, we spent nearly six hours descending and climbing steep hills, walking through typical villages of Himachal Pradesh before reaching a campsite in Kareri Village. From there, we could clearly see the snow-covered peaks of the Dhauladhar Range rising in the distance. A clear stream flowed through the campsite, adding to the quiet beauty of the landscape.

Day 2: Highlights of the Kareri Lake Trek Route
The following day, we continued upstream, scrambling over rocks and boulders along a well-worn trail. Around sixty villagers of all ages were climbing alongside us that day, as they were making a pilgrimage to Kareri Lake for a special puja dedicated to Shiva. Their plan was to reach the lake within a few hours, stay overnight, and descend early the next morning. It was remarkable to see how effortlessly they moved across the steep terrain. The river crossings were one of the most memorable—and daunting—aspects of the Kareri Lake trek. We stepped carefully across slick boulders while icy cold glacial water rushed below us, so cold it took your breath away if you accidentally touched it. Despite the challenging trail conditions, the dramatic gorge scenery with towering cliffs on either side made each crossing feel like an adventure, a moment where you’re caught between the raw power of the landscape. At the same time, however, the journey revealed the lack of basic sanitation facilities along the route, and the smell of both animal and human waste often lingered on at some parts of the trail, which made me sick.

After six hours of walking, we arrived at a small clearing beside the river, where we camped for the second night. It was then that I began to question the cleanliness of the water after seeing people throwing food scraps into the river and washing their hands, clothes, and dishes in it. That night, I came down with severe diarrhoea, which left me too weak to continue the climb the following day.

Day3: Kareri Lake at 3,000 Metres (Without Me)
My husband continued the climb the next day and eventually reached Kareri Lake, which lies at an altitude of nearly 3,000 metres. He described it as a stunning glacial lake ringed by snow-dusted peaks of the Dhauladhar Range, with water so startlingly turquoise it seemed almost unreal against the grey stone and white snow. The silence at that altitude is profound—a kind of hush that makes you feel small yet strangely complete. Weather on the Kareri Lake trek can turn dramatically without warning, as he discovered when a sudden hailstorm rolled in and forced him to wait for nearly two hours before conditions improved enough to descend. The experience taught him—and reinforces for anyone considering this trek—that you should always carry rain gear and extra layers regardless of what the forecast promises when you depart Mcleod Ganj, because the mountains make their own rules. We decided to bring the trip forward a day due to my condition unfortunately. All things considered, the Kareri Lake trek is one of the most rewarding Himalayan experiences you can have from Dharamshala, combining natural beauty, cultural encounters, and genuine mountain challenge.
